One-Day National Conference in Association with Brook London

Sexual Bullying amongst Children and Young People

Incidence, impact and what can be done to manage it effectively

A recent online survey revealed that nearly a quarter of 14 year olds have been forced to have sex or do something sexual that they did not want to do, and one in four 16 year olds have been hit or hurt in some way by someone they were dating.

This National Conference has been designed to bring together a range of leading professionals and experts in this field. Attendees will be informed about the results from current research into this topic and be able to explore practical ways to identify and manage this behaviour in order to safeguard and protect children and young people.

Key speakers at the conference include Sandra Gidley MP, Vice Chair of the All Party Domestic Violence Forum, Dawn Jennifer, London Regional Advisor for the Anti-Bullying Alliance and Juliet Agyemang Co-ordinator of the Sexual Bullying Project, run by Brook and working directly with schools throughout London.

There will also be a number of workshops throughout the day with representatives from Brook London, Barnardo's, TENDER, Cambridge Education @ Islington and Theorem Training Consultancy leading the groups. This will give delegates the opportunity to discuss and learn about practical initiatives and techniques being used effectively in a variety of settings to help combat this issue.

The conference programme will include:

  • Raising awareness of the prevalence of this behaviour amongst children and young people
  • An exploration of recent research focussed on this issue
  • Helping participants to recognise when sexual bullying may be occurring
  • Providing practical skills for delegates to intervene and help protect victims or those at risk
  • Gaining an understanding of current initiatives for working directly with children and young people
  • Sharing concepts of best practice and identifying useful resources
  • A presentation by the Futures Theatre Company which delivers dynamic drama sessions on topics including Sexual Health and Bullying

Women's Aid (www.womensaid.org.uk) Chief Executive , Nicola Harwin CBE said recently "although we know that 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence, it is still shocking to find out that this statistic applies equally to teenage girls in their very first relationships. it is also worrying that our survey suggested that the older the girls are, the more likely they are to accept being bullied and controlled, whereas they are less likely to confide in parents and ask for help. Whether it is physical violence, forced sex, or emotional abuse, this abuse is never justified"

This conference aims to enable participants to identify where there may be a problem and provide realistic strategies to help protect existing and potential victims and work successfully with those inflicting this pattern of behaviour on others.

Who Should Attend:
