Parental Alcohol and Substance Misuse and the Impact on Children

Research shows that alcohol and/or substance misuse can severely impact on parenting capacity, leaving children potentially exposed to risk of harm and impairment of their development. Working with parents who fall into this group is a challenging task for all professionals.

This course offers participants the opportunity to develop a greater understanding of the issues involved and to build good practice skills when dealing with this client group

Key issues explored on this topic during the day include:

  • Pattern and extent of misuse – Is there a parent/carer who does not misuse substances or alcohol? What is the pattern of use? Is there a risk to the children during misuse? Is there a place of safety when substance/alcohol use is taking place?
  • Home environment – Is the child in a substance using community? Do children witness parents/carers using drugs and other substances? Is there other illegal activity taking place and if so what impact is that having on the child?
  • Basic needs – Are the children attending school regularly? What is the effect of substance misuse on normal routines and on the child’s social relationships?
  • Procurement of Substances/alcohol – Are children being left while parents/carers obtain substances/alcohol? What are the financial implications of misuse within the family?
  • Health Risks – How and where are substances/alcohol stored in the home? If intravenous drugs are used, are needles stored and disposed of safely? Child’s perception of the situation – What is the child’s level of knowledge and understanding of substance/alcohol misuse? Is the child providing a caring role or are they taking responsibility inappropriate for their age and level of understanding.
